Living on a Fixed Income? Let's Share What's Working!

By Bruce Goldwell

Millions of seniors are living on fixed incomes, and many of us are facing the same challenge: How do we make our money go further while still enjoying life?

I'm 75 years old, and I live on a fixed income myself.

I know what it's like to look at monthly expenses, question rising prices, and wonder whether there's a better way to manage the money coming in.

That's one of the reasons I wrote my book, The Smart Senior's Guide to Living on a Fixed Income.

But here's something I've been thinking about.

We can learn just as much from one another as we can from reading a book.

Over the years, I've discovered that sometimes the simplest question can save money.

For example:

"Before I pay, may I ask whether you offer a senior or veteran discount?"

That one question has become an important part of my approach to saving money.

I've also learned that reviewing monthly bills can uncover charges or services we no longer need.

And sometimes a little research can reveal a better option.

But I'm only one person.

Imagine what we could discover if seniors everywhere started sharing their own experiences.

I'd Love to Hear Your Story

Are you living on Social Security, a pension, or another fixed retirement income?

Have you discovered a way to reduce your expenses?

Found an unexpected discount?

Negotiated a lower bill?

Or learned how to enjoy retirement without spending a fortune?

I'd love for you to share your experience in the comments below.

Here are a few questions to get the conversation started:

  1. What's the best money-saving tip you've discovered?

  2. Have you ever asked for a senior or veteran discount and been surprised by the answer?

  3. What's one monthly expense you've managed to reduce?

  4. What do you enjoy doing that costs little or nothing?

  5. What's your biggest challenge when it comes to living on a fixed income?

You don't have to answer every question.

Just share whatever you think might help someone else.

Your Experience Could Help Another Senior

Something that seems ordinary to you might be exactly what another person needs to hear.

Maybe you discovered a less expensive phone plan.

Perhaps you found an affordable way to travel.

Or maybe you've learned how to prepare enjoyable meals without overspending.

Even a small tip can make a difference.

If one person shares an idea that helps ten others save $10 a month, that's potentially $1,200 in combined savings over a year.

Now imagine what could happen if hundreds of people shared their experiences.

That's the kind of conversation I'd like to encourage.

Let's Keep This Helpful and Respectful

Everyone's financial circumstances are different.

Some retirees are financially comfortable.

Others are struggling to cover basic expenses.

And many fall somewhere in between.

There's no reason to judge anyone.

Please share your experiences respectfully, and remember that discounts, assistance programs, and prices may vary by location and eligibility.

For everyone's safety, don't post personal financial details such as account numbers, addresses, or other sensitive information.

And please avoid promotional links, investment pitches, or offers promising easy money.

Let's keep the conversation focused on practical experiences that may help others.

One Final Thought

I've written hundreds of books over the years, but I still believe there's something new to learn every day.

And sometimes the best lessons come from ordinary people sharing what they've experienced.

That's what I'd like this conversation to become.

A place where seniors can exchange ideas, encourage one another, and discover practical ways to live better.

Because the message behind my new book is simple:

Living on a fixed income doesn't mean living a limited life.

Now I'd like to hear from you.

What's one thing you've learned about saving money or enjoying life on a fixed income?

Share your experience in the comments below. Someone reading your answer might benefit from it.
